The Dilemma of Delayed Gratification

In psychology, there's a term called "delay of gratification," which means delaying current happiness for the sake of future benefits. Some say it as follows: "We postpone today's happiness in pursuit of an uncertain happiness in the distant future." Depending on how you hear it, it can be interpreted as "Let's enjoy today." They travel abroad every year, believe they deserve luxury gifts at least once a year, enjoy expensive whiskey, drive luxury cars, and feel entitled to such a life, thinking, "It's our one and only life, so why shouldn't we indulge?" It's natural for desires for such a life to arise.

However, experiencing the increasing fear as expectations rise, it's not difficult to feel apprehensive about enjoying today while dawn breaks. Therefore, many modern individuals willingly endure delayed gratification through considerable labor, even accepting depression and chronic diseases.

Is delayed gratification foolish? In Jordan B. Peterson's "12 Rules for Life," there's a sentence: "Labor is sacrificing the present for future gains. However, labor delays death."

Living a life of enjoyment is a choice. However, our ancestors have skillfully encoded through genes the legacy and guidelines that we must grow our lineage through reproduction and prosperity, passed down through generations. This code is not only simple and clear but also persistent and formidable. Many species, including mammoths and dinosaurs, have disappeared for disregarding this guideline.

Records, including the Bible, dictate that those who do not work should not eat. In extreme summary, it negates the value of existence. Nowadays, there's a trend of avoiding marriage and childbirth, and many young people are doing so. Even within apartment complexes in metropolitan areas, there are empty classrooms. While life may be difficult and challenging, that cannot be a perfect excuse. I'm sorry, but the world is not a paradise for enjoyment and indulgence. It's just a dream of dreamers.
