The Power of Choice
In our interactions, we encounter individuals who either uplift our spirits or drain our energy, leaving us feeling depleted. These energy vampires, as they are often called, can make our encounters quite unpleasant. It's natural to gravitate towards those who enhance our well-being.
Energy vampires typically exhibit three distinct traits:
Perpetually Negative Emotionality: Their negativity permeates their entire being.
Self-Absorbed Egoism: They lack empathy and are consumed by their own self-importance.
Narrow-Minded Rigidity: Their minds are entrenched in rigid, often illogical beliefs.
Yesterday, I found myself listening to a colleague's relentless complaints, their negativity radiating like a dark cloud. The urge to escape the situation was overwhelming, but I remembered the adage, "70% of a boss's salary is for listening." So, I forced myself to listen attentively, hoping their words would dissipate like the wind.
At one point, the weight of their negativity became unbearable.
"This is too much!" I thought to myself.
Then, a sudden idea struck me: "Text my friends!"
I quickly sent messages to two of them:
"Need to talk."
Moments later, my phone rang, and the conversation with my colleague ended naturally.
"I'll think about it. Send me a summary of what you said today. Let's talk again later!"
The same principle applies to strained relationships with superiors. Ultimately, the choice is mine. Should I comply or assert myself?
Maintaining an outwardly harmonious relationship with a difficult superior requires a significant energy expenditure. However, we must honestly evaluate whether this exchange is worth sacrificing our own happiness.
I establish a clear boundary, a safe distance between myself and the other person. I actively manage this boundary, ensuring they don't encroach upon it.
The energy spent maintaining this boundary is far less than the toll it would take to endure their negativity at a breaking point.
The power of choice lies with me.
